  • Scary!… Am fairly new to your site. I love your blog and all that you do. Kudos to you!

    indeed!!!!

  • Julinda

Terrific!! That kind of headline should be a boost for breastfeeding. (Hopefully!)

Its sad that this comes as a surprise to so many, when I saw the article I said “well, duh!” 900 lives is a conservative estimate in my opinion. What about SIDS, the majority of babies who die from SIDS are formula fed. I also wish the article had included world wide formula deaths, not just American.

  • Natasha Marlow

    Christine,
I agree! the article *should* talk about the world wide formula deaths…. then the number of saved lives by breastfeeding would double, if not triple….. scary.

  • Jamie

interesting….I formula fed all 4 of my kids due to a lactation problem (attempted for every one of them and got tons of support, my body just doesnt produce) I had never head that formula fed babies have a higher risk of SIDS.

  • Perhaps it’s more effective pointing out how many AMerican babies die from formula; with worldwide stats, people presume it’s because of sanitation, but Americans don’t have to worry about unsafe water and sterilizing bottles. 900 in AMerica? Ouch.

Just had an OB check up today and the nurse gave me my “gift.” GRRR!!! Two free ready made bottles of liquid formula. My first appointment came with a pile of coupons and a little Similac book on baby development. And now at 37 weeks, they hand moms this?! It’s obviously strategic timing as the baby can come any time now. I’d still be ticked regardless, but what makes me furious is that they’ve offered NO information on breastfeeding. I got a handout on counting kicks, the stages of labor, and postpartum depression. Nothing on breastfeeding. They have a poster about the various birth control options and piles of “Conceive” magazine in the waiting room, but nothing on breastfeeding. I was so angry with them I couldn’t even discuss the issue with them at that point. I just left the stupid “gift” in the exam room. But they will hear about this from me. These people know better. It’s just disgusting. Every two weeks I see these folks so they can make sure the baby’s heartbeat is good, my blood pressure is fine, and I’m not peeing too much protein or whatever, all to make sure that mom and baby have a nice healthy start, right? But then they set me up for breastfeeding failure from the very beginning with their Similac promotions. What a crock of #@$*.

@ Jamie; here’s a article from Dr. Sears about SIDS and formula feeding:

    http://www.askdrsears.com/html/10/T102100.asp

I understand all too well about supply issues. I struggled with low supply with both my sons, no amount of pumping or herbs could improve my supply. I had to supplement with formula in an SNS feeder for months, and only when I was sure that breastfeeding was well established did I switch to supplementary bottles. But I still breastfed, one baby for 2 years, one for 9 months (his choice, not mine!) Formula serves an important purpose. There are mothers who, for some unknown reason, can not make sufficient milk. But they are rare, estimated to be around 3%. That’s not enough to explain why breastfeeding rates are so low, and why society has such a complacent attitude towards formula.

  • julie, i would have opened one and put it on the counter, waited for them to come back, and say, “that milk you gave me tasted gross!” just for a good laugh.

this country really REALLY needs to start enforcing international code already! everywhere else it’s actually ILLEGAL for formula companies to market to mothers, whether it’s through commercials or through doctors. we’re the only country that doesnt enforce this!
