A little more about ‘The Case Against Breastfeeding’!

This from the site rixarixa.blogspot.com:
Hanna Rosin’s recent article in The Atlantic, The Case Against Breastfeeding, has drawn a lot of attention, comments, and criticism. Read the original article (edit: or don’t, there is a very good resume here,) then visit the following sites for a host of responses to her article:

Mom’s Tinfoil Hat argued that breastfeeding shouldn’t be framed as a benefit, but as the biological norm for feeding babies.
Alas, A Blog talks about breast, bottles and mothering “choices”
As the Citizens for Midwifery blog noted, both the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and the AAP (American Association of Pediatricians) have issued responses to Rosin’s article.
US Food Policy has an in-depth critique of the Rosin article
Adventures in (Crunchy) Parenting feels that Rosin is a bit to focused on herself
Mama-Is’s cartoon, Unbelievable Hypocrisy!, is probably the first of many on this topic.

(Oh! That last one is me! :o ) xox, mama)

  • We just had playgroup at our house and – it’s really strange how little breastfeeding mom’s now about how breastfeeding works.
My little boy is one year and four months old and nurses frequently. I talked with the mom of a 4-month-old girl about breastfeeding and she said that all of a sudden, after three weeks of no nighttime-nursing, her baby wants to night-nurse again.
When I told her that because of the teething, my little boy is drinking every night a lot of times, she said she was really relieved because she had thought her daughter was “going backwards” in developmental stages!
I remember reading an article about breastfeeding where it was mentioned that babies get something like 30% of their energy intake from nighttime nursing and I never expected my son to sleep without drinking.
But if a lot of moms think like that, it’s no wonder that my son seems to grow a little faster than the other babies – he’s the only one that doesn’t have to sleep with an empty stomach :-(

I have to say I’m very excited that the AAP actually took a stand on this! And I appreciate AAP’s standing policy on breastfeeding. I just hope that their members and other doctors/health professionals who deal with moms and babies will get on board and be as supportive. Too many times, a medical professional’s solution to ANY kind problem of a breastfeeding mom or her child is, stop breastfeeding. I was going to elaborate but you all know what I mean.

As for Hanna Rosin, what is her problem? How can any BF mom hate it that much?

AMEN!!!!…….uh sorry but I’m otherwise speechless! In other news did you see the “articles” in the news lately about orgasmic birthing, Ina May was in 1 of them……..!

WOW! I am completely shocked at what she wrote. It wasn’t an article, it was her opinion of how us BFing moms/OB/MW/Peds… are our to get her and MAKE her nurse her kids.

I have had 2 kids and nursed both of them for more than 2 years each. I think the only real time I felt “tied down” was when I was sick and needed to go to the hospital. I had to bring my daughter with me. My husband brought the stroller and I would nurse her and put her to sleep. Then she would sleep while I got looked at by the docs.

I think it is funny that she brought all these experts out saying how BM is very close to formula. Formula is man-made. Breastmilk is mom-made and 100%. Everyone knows that 100% natural is better for you than something made in a factory.

Yet another woman trying to give reason for her not wanting to take responsibility for her actions and blame it on the “BFing media”.

Did you get the email from United States Breastfeeding Committee to sign a petition protesting the Atlantic article? If not, email me and I’ll forward it to you.

  • dannielle, could you post a link so we could all sign it?

  • Thanks for the link love!

  • THis post is extremely hard to read. The box is pink and all the links are pink.

  • Here is a really cool essay that compares the “findings” in the Rosin article with another article in terms of the economics of breastfeeding. It’s pretty neat.
