You probably did consent somewhere in the pages and pages of admission forms. The part about being willing to let students work with you. You just didn’t realize that meant they would be doing things other than the procedure you came in for.
Somewhere near the end it says that students object to the practice in years 1 & 2 but by year 4, which is when the exams start, the students no longer object nor does it seem to phase most of them. Some of the other stuff on “UnNessecearian” (sp?) is pretty scarey as well. Like bladder surgery being done on women who come in for other surgeries. (Because it’s good to practice) ugh!
I liked the suggestion as well – someone recommends writing in permanent marker on your bikini line “I do not consent to pelvic exams while unconscious”. Like writing “wrong leg” or “wrong arm” as appropriate if having limb surgery. At least it’s something you can do besides asking and trusting :/
Rape! Seriously, how is this different from waking up and feeling pangs after being drugged and raped. A woman wakes up to painful issues in her vagina and/or uterus and has no idea why, no documentation, nothing. Students lining up? What if all that prodding led to some sort of problem? The woman would have no background information to address it because she would not know about the exams. So, physical trauma would not be information she would give her gynecologist. But, maybe the gyno would know, remembering his days of raping unconscious, non-consenting women with gloved hands and/or medical instruments.
I agree, if you have to be unconscious in a hospital, especially a teaching hospital, it makes sense to make it clear that you do not consent. But isn’t it fucked up that you even have to make that clear? Especially given that not everyone is aware of this practice.
It just stings all the more that the article points out how this is actually unnecessary and unhelpful to medical students.
That’s a violation! Not only do I have to fear for myself, but my mother, and my daughter too?! Not on MY watch. The more I know about the medical community, the less I trust it- and that’s just sad. We should be able to trust Doctors- we are suppossed to be able to trust them with our lives, and yet we can’t trust even them with our vaginas.
Don’t get me started on women’s rights on this one… So angry right now. What can we, non-medical students, do to stop this BS?
Oh dear..
Hard to find the article you are referring to. Can you cite it?
