i’m reading “the ultimate breastfeeding answer book” as part of my training to be a lactation educator, and the doctor that wrote it insists that BFin is the norm, and it’s not so much beneficial as the formula is harmful. ooooh, i can hear the FFers now! <3
I agree with the idea that we don’t need to do what’s “best” all the time. “Good enough” is often good enough.
However, I define “good enough” as breastfeeding with an imperfect diet, and possibly while taking medicines or drinking alcohol occasionally. You know, what a normal new mom can attain.
I say “I fed my babies the normal way” pretty frequently, and get puzzled looks when people figure out I meant breastfeeding. I also say “Oh, I didn’t want to lower their IQs or make their jaws underdeveloped”! So far, no fights.
The underlying issue is defining good enough. I once saw the evil mag. publish a bit where the mom shrugged off even trying BF because she saw it as fresh peas v. frozen peas. Really its more like biodynamic oranges picked off a tree and eaten that day v. orange soda. How do you convey that?
you’ll love this, got blasted by a public health nurse (at the health dept no less) for nursing my toddler in her office! IF she had tried that in the waiting room, lol, ya’ll KNOW what would have gone down. (Pregnant & Still nursing, isn’t that the goal these people work for?, sheesh)
PERSONALLY, Lori, I prefer the oranges in my OWN yard thank you (FL perk, lol) but orange soda, lol, that’s a good one! fresh versus frozen or CANNED, yuck!
Just read an excerpt from a flea market zine about a guy who was talking to a icu nurse (whose babe was in a sling, lol) & wanted to know if she was still nursing. HE meant the job SHE answered about the baby, lol! He has it listed as his MOST embarrassing moment, not likely but I guess for a MAN, talking to a stranger, ok. Weird world.
Lori – I was just talking about similar analogies yesterday. The main one was bf is like a home cooked meal and formula is like fast food: you want to give your kids the home cooked as often as possible, the fast food is only good in a bind. It was phrased more eloquently, but that’s the gist of it.
@ Erin – but I can’t even convince most how bad 1 meal at McDonalds is. Since we eliminated trans-fat and HFCS we CAN’T eat there or we get ill. Even the salads!!! The rest of my family thinks a weekly salad at McDonalds IS a healthy lifestyle!!!
Urg. I can feel her irritated thought bubble

Erin – I love the fast food comparison.
And of course I love the comic too, as always.
