As my husband pointed out to me; when I tried to equate this billboard with the Carl’s Jr ads where people get food “all over the place” (tag line is “If it doesn’t get all over the place is doesn’t belong in your face.”); he pointed out the fact that the “Got Milk?” ads have a LOT more milk on a person’s face and it’s ANIMAL milk at that and no one finds THAT disgusting in the slightest!

    *blinks blankly*

Babies dribble milk either formula or breast milk, but put the words “breast milk” next to the milk dribble and all of a sudden it’s “disgusting”?!

I’m more disturbed by the billboards in my city that have 3 babies (about4-6mo old) on it with the tag line of “You call it abortion; we call it murder!” But that’s a whole nother debate, LOL

I can’t help but wonder if people would calm down if we stopped talking about breasts. Would “human milk” be somehow more palatable than “breast milk”?

  • i really enjoy your blog! i’m an illustrator AND a breastfeeding mommy too!

i put your blog in my links!

  • That the “Breastmilk Satisfies” billboard?

I think I prefer the billboard in my hometown with women holding their kids and saying “We breastfeed, and so can you!”.

  • Yes! Here it is in all it’s glory:

I actually think (as a visual designer) that the ad campaign is poorly done. Breastmilk Satisfies? What’s up with that motto? It’s totally lame. They also picked a boy, so you’ve got the sexualizing of breastfeeding, also they play the race issue too. Overall, I think another advertising agency should have been picked. Like my mother-in-law works for this one McKinney and Silver and they did this campaign:

    Now that’s an ad campaign!

There are other billboards with white babies though too.

  • I couldn’t see the words in the “pie chart”, and when I clicked on zoom in the site took me to a subscription page and asked for money to see the ad.
What are the words are on the nipple?

  • This morning I was nursing Kairi back to sleep and she dribbled a little milk out onto her chin…. She was milk drunk, sleeping and just so sweet. My heart swelled with pride seeing her like that.

I don’t understand how people can be so offended by that. It makes me sad.

Yes, it is absolutely true here in Toledo, Oh. And people are FREAKING about it. We have billboards saying things like “friends don’t let friends not get their GED”, “Why would you eat this (points to pig) but not this (points to a puppy?), “Don’t shake your baby!”, “Choose your partner carefully. Your child’s life could depend on it!”, and so on and so forth….but the most offensive one we have is a child with milk on his face?! I better make sure my baby never spits up or else we might be called in for public indecency…

I don’t think the billboard (as seen online, not in person) looks very good but I love the concept. Yes, how can someone find that offensive but not all that other stuff we see on billboards?

  • Mari

I find it bizarre that they are offended by this. I just don’t get it.
