Yeah, TopHat, formula is mostly water too. But I can’t seem to be able to make corn syrup with my breasts.. So while we get close, I can’t copy formula and they can’t copy me.
When I watch toddlers lately, I eat their leftovers specifically to get their germs in me. That way I’m sure that I’m exposed to any naughty bugs my little guy is exposed to and will create antibodies for them and put them into my milk. My 6yo caught a nasty cold from a 2 yo I sat that lasted for about a week. I was quite discouraged when I realized my 3 month old caught it too, about a week later. But it lasted two days. I remembered when my daughter’s colds were that easy.. AS SOON as she weaned, that all changed. Without Mega Mojo Miracle Stuff, colds will last about a week or so. If mama’s body finds the germ familiar (and I’ve worked for years in child care centers and schools – so I’ve had it all), the milk will be on that bug in no time. Try that with a bottle.
Also, my friend’s milk got rid of a wart on my thumb with a few applications. I swear! Mine worked on my daughter’s “eczema that looked like ringworm to me but doc figured it was probably eczema because the milk made it clear up” after one application. So there. I’ve not tried using formula to resolve minor skin issues. But water does good stuff. Right?
Another great thing is that breastmilk’s taste is varied by what momma eats. I like to think that is the reason my kids are not picky eaters. Last night it was green curry, tonight garlic sauced pasta, or chocolate, wait they have that covered but I don’t think they are going to be adding essence of garlic to formula cans soon and there was a study once that said babies nursed longer after their mother’s ate garlic!
If you want a pie chart for breastmilk, you can go here: http://rehydrate.org/breastfeed/faq-exclusive-breastfeeding.htm
So if formula wants to be like breastmilk, it needs to be mostly water.
….and magical mega-mojo miracle stuff, my dear TopHat.
Ahh… the mm mm stuff. Like the smell of mama, the feel of her skin, the comfort of having her nearby.
grace: very true!

Julie – re: the germs. I always thought that’s why my son seems to be obsessed with sticking his hand in my mouth while he nurses!
MeganK.. Hey, you might be on to something! Instinct..
