The Zoops!

No Seriously, it’s time to Vote!

Three political things that made me laugh out loud recently…

  1. Driving through Manhattan Beach, on the side of a smartly designed beach house, someone went and created a big vinyl sign that said ” THAT ONE ’08 ”   hee hee hooooooooooo! If you have no idea what they’re talking about, then you didn’t watch the debates my friend ;o) ‘That One’ is an endearment *ahem* that McCain used about Obama. I’ve borrowed it in my latest comic, loving the subtlety of it all.
  2. Also, in Manhattan Beach the Republican Headquarters is in a tiny little building in a residential neighborhood right where a Hawaiian restaurant used to be. It’s been sporting GIANT political signs for months now, but suddenly the next door neighbor has plastered their house with Obama signs, including renaming their hobby/business Obama Ding Repair. It’s a comical sight side by side.
  3. Here in California we have a Ballot measure-8 specifically-that wants to once and for all put an end to gay marriages. Now, I’m as traditionally married as just about anyone-if that means that when it comes time to do the dishes I’m the one standing pregnant and barefoot in my apron hollering, “why does it have to be me?!!!”  But I just can’t be convinced (don’t try, it won’t work!) that it hurts me at all to have people who love each other get married. I say, spread the love, the responsibility, the vows. The more love we’ve got, the less hate. Seriously, I’m a lot more troubled when people get divorced. SO, in the small town where I live there’s a main thoroughfare that has had the bright yellow ‘yes on 8′ signs all over it, much to my chagrin. Well, one day we were riding up over the crest of the hill and saw some  kids, just like yours or mine, about 13 years of age, running like crazy. Kevin was the first to notice the yellow signs under their arms. This made me happy on 2 levels, first we got to have a talk with the kids about Freedom, Equality, and Justice, and second, we got to talk about vandalism and why they shouldn’t do it. Though we were secretly applauding the kids…
Now, I know it takes all kinds to make a blog readership, You may disagree with me on politics and that’s okay, I remember the first time I realized that a mama group I was a part of was sporting some Republicans. Shock, dismay and then acceptance. We’re all working toward the same goals, right? A better world for our kids? Tomorrow is election day, and I for one look forward to the better world coming…
Love,
Heather

  • it’s actually illegal for people to put those signs up on the sides of the road, so it’s not considered vandalism to take them down. here in florida there are groups who’s specific pourpose is taking down such signs and trying to contact them to let them know it’s illegal and that the authorities can get involved. if election day weren’t tomorrow, i’d be running around taking down the “yes on 2″ signs here. the one here in florida hurt not only same-sex couples, but anyone who’s in a domestic partnership regardless of gender. like my mate and i. the only reason he and i aren’t “traditionally” married is because down here it costs an arm and a leg for just the paperwork alone, and the cost of living is too great for us to afford it. but anyways, i guess i’ve been a bit long-winded, lol.

Oh, that comic sent shivers down my spine. I am SO excited! The song, “Here comes the sun” is going through my head, Little Darlin’. But I’m scared, very scared of the time between tomorrow and inauguration. I will try not to make myself sick about it. I know the campaigns say differently, but I believe that regardless of who you’re voting for, you are voting for an improvement.

Michigan voted against gay marriage in 2004. The day after voting day 2004 was a dark day indeed. Nothing seemed to make any sense. Well, at least it slapped us awake. We’ve got the highest voter registration rate in the country now. And all over the country, people are waking up. I think we’ll be alright.

  • I’m with you Heather – it doesn’t diminish my marriage one iota if other people are or are not married. I would have thought that any measure that encouraged people to make a public statement of their lifetime commitment to one another would be applauded.

I am a democrat and a baptist…a bit unique here in Southern PA. While debating gay marriage with a church friend I pointed out if gay marriage should be illegal because the Bible says its wrong….then guess what….so should remarriage of a divorced person. Yep, went over like a lead balloon! Well, gotta pack-up the boys to go help elect That One!

  • Gemini

Go go That One 08!!! ^.^

If the argument is that marriage is a religious term and the religion doesn’t agree then they should just legally change the reference of ALL people who are legally bound in a marriage sort of way and let your religion call your ceremony and your union whatever it likes. (because religion has no place in politics)

I’m just as fine listing a legal civil union with my dear husband on my taxes as long as everyone else down the street have the exact same legal rights. (just my opinion of course)

hee hee! i actually got tingles reading that comic. i’ve got my fingers, toes, legs, and eyes crossed, along with my vote in the box. i’ll be glued to the TV this evening for sure!

As my husband pointed out to my dad (who is almost violently homophobic, and don’t ask me why because I don’t know!) the Bible says many things, among which is that we are not to judge others- that’s God’s job!

If gay people want to get married, adopt children, and make loving, honest families- where’s the harm in that? I think there will always be enough heterosexuals to continue the species- last I checked, we weren’t exactly dying out. People who love each other and want to commit to a lifetime of working on that love should be allowed to. Period.

My middle school did a poll today- “If you could vote, who would it be for?” and the outcome was overwhelmingly for That One.

  • OBAMA IS THE 44TH PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.

we won! this truly is the dawning of a brighter day. the storm is over, the sun is shining again.

WOOT! what an amazing comic… what an amazing DAY!!!! YEAH BABY! We have “That One” as president!

here in AZ we had prop 102… and it passed. I am so happy to be leaving this narrow minded state. I just don’t get it. It sickens me. How does that passing make people happier, better, the world safer? It doesn’t. GRRRR.

Heather in Tucson (for two more weeks)

  • i guess you can delete my last comment. if it hasn’t been approved by now, perhaps it never will be. my apologies.

Congratulations to all you in the US! (We’re up in Canada) We are soooo excited for you! You couldn’t believe the number of Canadians glued to the television praying that enough people got out to vote and make their voices hear!

    Love the comic too!

Sad to hear about gay marriages in California, that is truly upsetting :(

We’re liberal republicans (is that such a thing… maybe it’s called moderate??)

And it is because of our views on taxes, states rights, those things.

We are pro-choice republicans, which confuses some, too, because we are anti-abortion, but will not infringe on civil rights nor take us back to the dark days of illegal abortions to get rid of them.

We are 100% in favor of education of both abstaining as well as safe sex to try to eliminate the need for the ones that are not medically needed.

And, when it comes to gay marriage, we don’t even care if they use the word marriage (though it took me longer than my dh and we had many a debate about it, but in the end, he won me over to his side).

No matter what religious beliefs we have or others have, the simple fact is that scriptures of every religion speak of tolerance and the law being equal for everyone of every belief and giving it up to the supreme being to judge in the end.

Not only that, we believe in families and children. And I will not put a child at risk for not being able to stay with the parent that raised them simply because that parent isn’t heterosexual.

I don’t believe in preventing two people who love each other and want to commit from doing JUST THAT.

How wonderful not just for them, but for their children to know that Mommy and Mommy or Daddy and Daddy are not just living together, not just spiritually connected or legally contracted, but legally recognized as a couple for life…. and that they have the EXACT same rights as a man and woman would.

I did vote McCain, but I loved his speech when he conceeded. It spoke what I’ve always felt, of coming together under the elected and respecting and supporting the new leader.

That’s what is beautiful about a democracy. We voted, we got our voices heard, but no matter whether we got what we want our not, the majority ruled and we all have to respect that decision.
