World Breastfeeding Week, Do This...

Mama’s Math #37!

World Breastfeeding Week!

It’s world Breastfeeding Week and boy howdy, we’re havin’ some fun here, breastfeedin’ and galavanting around. It’s great. Usually I forget to post about how awesome W.B.W. is because it’s summer and I’m at the beach and for some reason I can never get my act together. Luckily my favorit-est fans over at my fan page: Heather-Cushman-Dowdee’s fan page are posting lots and lots of really awesome, yummy articles.

Number one fan Stephanie just had a baby too ( Adelyn Grace 7/8/10 8lbs 4oz 21½” long 5:17pm), so please wish her well and take a gander at the beautiful photos. What a gorgeous baby!!!!!!!

I’ve been watching my kachingle stats grow over the past week (read my post about it here : I’m a kachingle-er! (I’m already up to 20 kachinglers, only 60 ish more and I’m number one!) and that’s really really awesome. But, I started thinking that we also need to build a giant kachingle network of breastfeeding friendly sites that we can all link to and give money to. That would be a great thing to do during WBW support each other supporting new moms. So, I started a list:

I really want Kellymom.com to have a kachingle medallion. I send new mamas to her site for support almost weekly. I’d love for her to get some of my kachingle cash for her work. I’m going to send her a note.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if LLL was kachingle-able? Or what if your local lll site had a medallion. Then every time you checked to see what time the meeting is, you’d slide them some cash. I’m sure they can use it!

Tanya over at the motherwear blog has done an interview with me, she should have a medallion on her site, so when I visit I can toss her some moolah. I’d like that.

BreastfeedingSymbol.org, we could toss them a penny for use of the symbol if they had a kachingle medallion.

AND Mothering.com what if they had a kachingle medallion and whenever I visited their forums to search for my name (only once, I swear! ;oP) I could give them kachingle money. I would like that.

I know there are so many great breastfeeding blogs, and right now I’m totally drawing a blank…OOH, I’ll check my RSS feed, there! How about
analyticalarmadillo

and bestforbabes.org

Okay, look, that’s all I can think of right now, and the kids are begging for my attention. Why don’t you guys post some links to favorite pro-breastfeeding blogs, sites and organizations and I’ll send them a link to my post and maybe we can grow a kachingle network. Wouldn’t that be cool?

new comic posting in a couple of hours.
Love ya!

Happy World Breastfeeding Week!

Two Possible Scenarios

Translation!

Dearest Reader,

I was contacted this weekend by Dr Chiara Pozzi Perteghella, and here’s her story: HOW NOT TO PRACTISE WHAT ONE PREACHES: here’s how NOT TO support breastfeeding (in other words, why I won’t sit my IBCLC exam) I’m sure you will be as stunned as I am. I’m actually reminded about my own past. My second daughter was born 5 weeks before I had my thesis defense scheduled. I attended the grueling 2 hour event with her tucked in the sling. I answered questions, stood and rocked her when she seemed a little restless, and even turned around for one second to latch her on so that she could nurse and go back to sleep. I was in front of a large audience of professors and professionals. And she didn’t interrupt in any way and if she would have I would have asked for a minute or two to regain our composure, I feel sure that my thesis committee would have cut me a break. How can we expect any less from a ‘pro breastfeeding organization’? Dr. Chiara Perteghella includes many email links in her post so that an email campaign might ensue. I figure we’re just the right people for the job.
Love,
Heather

I'm a Kachingler!

Hello Mamas and Papas,

I’m so excited to tell you about this new thing…

But first, some background story in case you’re new, and certain that I’m living in the big house with a staff of 10 by now. I’ve been creating comics over at thecowgoddess.com and now here at mama-is.com since way back in 2002. That’s a LONG time. The internet has given me a way to reach more people than I would have ever been able to reach before and allowed me the chance to self-publish books and occasionally print shirts (I know I know, I need more shirts!) and when I have something new for sale, whenever I post about it for the first time, guess where the first order comes from? Croatia! Now, that’s a cool thing about the internet.

A downside to the internet is that all. content. is. free. Okay, maybe that’s a good side, but if you’re trying to be a content creator it’s not good at all. I’ve tried making money off of selling stuff. I’ve tried adding advertising. I’ve tried donations and selling more stuff and begging and pleading and… and… And ultimately I want all my comics to be free. How else will that new mama see them? But I still wonder, why can’t I make money, is it just that it’s not worth anything to anyone else but me?

But now I’ve realized that it’s not just me, it’s EVERYONE. From the NYTimes and Newsweek, to the lowly bloggers and cartoonists and musicians. Nobody can make any money off this internet thing-y. Here’s an idea, think of your favorite blogger, someone who posts all the time and you read faithfully. She has a fabulous life and great kids, she’s published books, you hang on her every word. Find her contact addy and send her an email. Ask this: How are you doing, really? Are you making a living with your writing? (I promise I’ll answer every email ;o) Your favorite regional or national indy musician, ask him. It’s a rare one who is. This culture, the internet that makes reaching each other so much easier, is turning the content creators, the writers, the artists, the musicians; into serfs. There I said it. Don’t believe me? Read Jaron Lanier’s You Are Not a Gadget, he’ll explain it.

But, finally here comes Kachingle. The coolest idea for supporting the artists and writers and cartoonists that you love. Here’s what you do, sign up and create a kachingle account (see the box with the medallion at the top of my side-bar? Click on that. Go ahead, and I’ll wait here.) You’ll be charged $5 a month and whenever you visit a site with a kachingle medallion on it, and you want to contribute to the work they do, you’ll ‘kachingle’ them. Then at the end of the month all the sites you’ve kachingled will have your $5 divvied up between them, according to how many times you’ve visited them. You do nothing but have fun visiting sites, I might make a buck or two. Believe me, it will be awesome!

Now, here’s the fun part. Kachingle is Brand NEW. There are only a few sites that are kachingle-able. I’m now one of them. The top site on the Kachingle site has 87 people kachingling them. I want, even for a brief day or two to be the number one site. Will you help me? Join Kachingle, and kachingle me. Then talk all of your friends into kachingling me too, the first month of kachingle is a trial period, you can always quit if you don’t like it. And hey, list your site on kachingle also, I’ll kachingle you back!

Thank you!
Love,
Heather

ps. don’t forget to kachingle my other site too!

thanks for the idea, Lisa B.!
