I’m in the New York Times!!!!!

Posted on | December 22, 2008 | 7 Comments

Seriously. (Thank you Lisa Belkin!) and thank you Sean Sakamoto (remember he wrote  the response to a certain Rabbi for me a while back: here  for telling me, so that I could do the “I’m in the New York Times!!” dance and get all breathless and read it out loud to the family (who were kind enough to interrupt their reading of a Christmas classic book to listen to me) in one gi-normous run on sentence while I danced around and acted goofy, until I got a braxton hicks contraction and had to sit down to recover. And then find waldo for an while with the little one…phew! I’m excited can you tell?!!!!

I need a daily dose of Mama Is, by cartoonist Heather Cushman-Dowdee. She has been the artist behind Hathor the Cow Goddess for years, and this summer, in a fit of pique over news that women give up on breastfeeding too early, she came out from behind her Hathor “mask” and created this new blog — which supports natural parenting, in a nonpreachy, downright funny way.

Hee hee hoooooooooooo!

man, I need to go pee and then perhaps lie down ;o)

Time to be sick?

Posted on | December 16, 2008 | 4 Comments

It’s the holidays, there’s no time to get sick AND my little ones are just now getting over a chest funk that lasted far longer than it should have, but not before passing it to dearest husband who just so happened to be working on night shoots the whole week. While sick. And me, me, I somehow managed to keep from getting sick. Amazing as that may sound. Until Sunday and suddenly I was foggy headed and the throat started to hurt and oh man, who has the time?!

So I did what any old wife would do, pulled on 2 pairs of socks, put on a scarf, stuck some zicam up my nose, took some cold cf and a new thing called ‘no time for colds’ because that’s just so true. And with two covers on me all night, I got nice and hot and, Voila! woke up without a cold. Phew!

But here’s a comic to commemorate the moment…

and don’t forget about the calendar for sale

Heather

The Calendar!!!! 2009!!!! It’s Here!!!

Posted on | December 12, 2008 | 3 Comments

Okay, so I’m not going to re-tell the traumatic story, OR lament the fact that the full-color calendar that was not meant to be, is now a ‘classic black and white’ calendar (old school, kind of like me;o) I gathered my wits and took a deep breath, and built a calendar in the two days since I spoke to you last. And it’s DONE!

I drove it over to my favorite print shop yesterday, (alas, they had closed down), but I found Mitra working at ANOTHER print shop and enlisted her help (boy, did I need it, have you ever SEEN the crazy order that calendar pages have to be printed in? ) We found that with enough tape and glue the whole thing would hold together enough to be pushed through her copier 2 or 3 times while we organized the pages and voila! calendar! And JUST in time to rush back home to see Santa on our street. As youngest daughter says, ”mommy, I LOVE santa.” yes, indeedily-do.

So,

More comics than you can believe, pithy sayings and holidays galore!

My Birthday! And other calendar stuff…

Posted on | December 8, 2008 | 11 Comments

Hey Y’all,
I had such a fabulous birthday yesterday, dear husband and the kids needed to do some last minute shopping, so I went to a bookstore and spent a couple of hours wandering around. That’s one of my favorite things to do. I ended up buying myself a book by Neil Postman, Building a Bridge to the 18th Century: How the Past Can Improve Our Future, Which I’m so excited about reading because I’m sliding into the depths of another one of my “o god, computers are killing me, luddite-inspired tail spins”.

These are the quick notes: I started building a calendar at the end of October, but because of technical problems with the company that I’m ordering with, even with many many many hours of work on my part, and back and forth with customer service and technical support and ai yi yi, the calendar finally got built on Nov. 22. Since then I have sent numerous emails to the company telling them that I’m waiting for a proof. On the afternoon of December 5th, I got a phone message saying that ‘they’re waiting for my files’ and so all weekend I was going ballistic and generally impossible to be around. This morning, I received another email telling me that they were still ‘waiting’. I’ve responded with an email politely asking what the hell is going on, and guess what? they’re “sending me a proof today”. One of the things that I don’t get is where are all the apologies? The ‘we screwed ups’? Not once has anyone said anything that wasn’t in effect expecting me to be patient, polite and easily put off.

Okay. And also, 2 weeks ago I placed an order for one of my books and was told that my book doesn’t print properly, and that I should have uploaded a proper pdf in the first place. Except I did upload a proper pdf and it has printed properly many times before. I’ve now sent 7 letters to this company asking for an explanation, that are always answered with, “this is how you upload your new, ‘proper’ pdf”. Again, no apologies, or explanations, or ‘hey, we know the customer should be happy, so here’s what we’re going to do for you’….ARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH.

So, I’m sharpening my axe. Not for any bloodshed, but I’m thinking a log cabin in the woods somewhere. But here’s the thing, for my birthday my dearest family gave me an ipod and an fm tuner thing-y so we can listen to stuff in the van (van hasn’t had a tape player or cd player in forever! and remember I’m in Los Angeles and we spend a LOT of time in the car) so that’s cool, and my dear mother-in-law (Hi Suzanne, thanks for reading my blog ;o) gave me a digital frame that holds up to 1000 pictures! So, I have to put off my luddism dreams for a bit while I read the quick-start guides and download some information (and possibly spend some time live chatting with tech support), and THEN I’m headed to the woods. Definitely.

Oh, and about the calendar, I’m supposedly checking a proof today, and if it sucks I’ve got a back-up plan of a black and white ‘classic’ calendar that I can probably pull off with some tape and sharpies and some staples and stickers. So stay tuned (and thanks for asking Heather, how’s Maine? cold enough for ya? ;o) , Friday will be the day when the ’shop now’ button goes live!

and thanks for listening to me rant ;o) and lest you feel too sorry for me, this is my birthday cake:
flower cake YUM!
xox,
Heather
