only scary thing is, I’ve heard of people driving with their baby in a sling. Probably not a good idea! Other than that, you’re absolutely right, as usual!
Amen. And they say they don’t come with instructions, but I guarantee you’ll get more instructions than you’ll ever need with your new baby. It’s quite the package, really. The return policy sucks though.
Return Policy? Can’t say I’ve ever NEEDED to see if mine even HAD a return policy…….Usually VERY pleased with the model I receive! Of course I may change my mnd when they become teenagers, lol!
Just wish I wasn’t so domestically challenged so I could make my own pouch. I can’t find any at stores and the ones I’ve seen online are outragously expensive.
So true that you don’t need to buy a pouch. I was in line once at the zoo with my babe in a pouch (purchased w/ cute baby print on it) when an elderly Chinese woman smiled at me and took her grandchild from mom’s stroller and in less than a minute had tied the baby to her back with a wrap she was wearing and then gave me another smile. I was delighted!
@ Heather and Anastasia:
I have two teenagers (to go with the pre-teen, other kidlet and baby) and they are awesome! Attachment parented teens are empathetic, secure and connected to you in ways that those of us who weren’t attachment parented are pleasantly surprised by.
(It’s like breast milk…it doesn’t suddenly lose it’s benefits once your baby has it’s first birthday!)
Well *technically* the item pictured is a ring sling, not a pouch. All you need is some kind of sling, whether a pouch, ring sling, wrap, or even a more structured carrier like a mei tai or Beco.
The absolute simplest thing to make is a wrap — you just need to make sure the fabric is strong enough, and wide enough… make sure the edges are finished securely… learn to tie it and you’re ready to go. Or use mama’s tie-onto-a-ring trick.
A pouch is the simplest to use, but is a little trickier to sew. They may SEEM expensive online, but remember the amount of use you’ll get out of them — usually 2-3 years per child, then they can be passed on to your next kid or a friend or re-sold. If a pouch is $50, say, count that as $25/year, or $2/month. Two bucks a month to provide all that ease and comfort and all the wonderful stuff slings are for you and your baby!
But you can get pouches for much cheaper than that too. Deirdre has great ones as cheap as $25, for instance. Or you can take advantage of those second-hand slings (of all types, not just pouches of course), for instance at thebabywearer.com forums, or various yahoo groups.
Don’t forget to add in the savings of not needing a $300 “travel system”. I ended up buying way more slings than I really needed to, with my daughter, but I never bought a stroller or a bucket car seat (just used the convertible from the beginning), or a playpen (because I could wear her while doing housework and didn’t need to trap her somewhere) or a crib (because I could wear her for her naps and didn’t need a ’safe’ place to stash her)… so even with my sling extravagance we still SAVED money. And then I sold half of them when I stopped using them, just kept the couple that I still use the most (she’s now over 3 and we still wear her sometimes!)
TRAVELING, AirPorts! LOVE my baby carriers for the airports! Worth every CENT, even MORE SO after she got sick on a flight (& wanted to be held the whole time) or when we landed somewhere & found out we were WALKING off the plane instead of onto a skyway! Now that I have back carries down I can wear her for getting OFF AND pick up my luggage at the same time! (while pregnant, love that trick) I DO use my stroller alot (yep I burned out my maclaren, lol) but it makes a great shopping cart! & on days where she “thinks” she wants o walk but then gets too tired, a simple pouch is a godsend! not to mention it will be a GREAT way to carry my newborn while she’s getting used to having the baby around! Wish I’d had one with my 2nd baby! (My 1st was diagnosed with autism shortly after #2 was born, he didn’t even know I’d brought home a baby) Was wonderful bringing my AP toddler to an adults only baby shower (mei tai in back carry mode)
I LOVE attachment Parenting, the more I do it the more I find to like about it! MY 1st resisted EVERY principal but then again, he was autistic so that actually makes sense! & even HE gets something out of it, even now as a preteen! & it definitely makes it easier for him to participate with the little ones in a way that makes sense to them both! (I don’t think he’d understand the difference between crying it out & a cry for food or a dirty diaper, lol) Now if Heather can figure out a funny way to draw a newly single Mama with a 2 yr old & a new born in the family bed, I’D LOVE to see it, lol!

I wish there was an easy way to share this on Facebook. I have a few friends with new babies who would benefit from seeing this.
