And we don’t even have a mortgage…
The first day that the computer crashed, I went to the library to buy a new one through amazon.com. While I was there my husband called, and I put the phone on silent-hey, I’m in the library, don’t call me, it’s embarassing! But then he called again, and again. So, I went outside and called him back to hear, “Don’t buy the computer, our landlord foreclosed and we’ve been given 60 days to relocate.” Yes, indeedy. And here I was hoping that we’d get to actually NOT move while I was pregnant. I’ve moved every single pregnancy and man, it just sucks. Except for getting to clean out your closets, that part is cool.
In the meantime, we’re squatting in our house as there is no one to pay rent to, while we look for a new place…welcome to the new economy brought to you by the deregulation fanatics, ain’t life grand?
Love,
Mama aka Heather

I’m so sorry! Good luck to you and may you find a wonderful (and secure!) home for your baby to be.
Oh, Heather! What an upset. For some perverse reason, our culture seems to need to make each woman’s pregnancy as stressful as possible. Gloria

I just heard a gal talk about this on NPR today during TOTN. She was in CA, too…what are the squatting laws there?
You’re being FAR too kind to your landlord. If he’s really in foreclosure, you could string him out for a long while without paying any rent, waiting for the bank to take the house, and then have the bank pay YOU to hand over your keys quietly without a fight (a lovely practice called “cash for keys”).
Seriously, foreclosure can be a tenant’s best friend.
I heard that you should set your rent money even if you can’t pay your landlord. Can’t remember why now.
Heather – This happened to us back in February – after having just moved half-way across the country six months prior into the home that was supposed to be our lease-to-own. The owners stopped paying their mortgage as soon as we moved in; they just took our rent money and ran off with it.
We went to lawyers, but we were told we really had no recourse, especially since we were month-to-month tenants. It SUCKED. We’ve since gone on to move into a much nicer rental (that we may decide to purchase if we stay here). We moved to a HOME. In the midst of a lot of other Really Bad Stuff ™ that has happened this year, THIS has been a blessing in disguise.
I know it seems unfathomable that it would be a GOOD thing, especially with three littles and another on the way. And I do encourage you to pursue legal action if your landlord is breaking any laws (like breaking your lease). But regardless, I pray this will be a blessing for your family as well.
Oh that just blows. I’m so sorry. I too have managed to move during both of my pregnancies. The last one I packed up the entire house by myself, too. Moving sucks to begin with, moving when your 6mo pregnant is a special ring of hell.
Shucks – no chance of you being able to buy it?
WE get to come back stateside to this after years abroad, yuck! Our landlord here in Germany tried to kick us out but they aren’t allowed (pregnancy IS special here, YAY!) but I feel you, I know after we move in 2 weeks I’M gonna be buying a pee stick because everytime we’ve moved….well you know the drill, lol! Needless to say the continuity of medical care sucks so I’m just going solo if it happens again!
((((Hugs)))
I hope you get settled into a new place (or find some way to purchase the house you’ve been renting) long before you start nesting!
that’s the kinda crazy thing that would happen if i got pregnant again. (with my first i was kicked out of the house i was living in because i got pregnant, and with my second we almost lost our health insurance).
wow… that sucks!!
I hope you guys find a great place soon… and I agree… moving when pregnant sucks… but it is a great way to declutter!
Cash for keys.. yup. My neighbor got that too. Be sure to get your five hundred bucks or whatever it is. The bank takes their sweet time getting to the house. They have more houses than they can handle. Start packing, but wait for the eviction notice.
I know it sucks.. but what a great time to be in the market to buy a home!!! If we didn’t own this house and have a mortgage that we can actually afford… We would be shopping for a house. There are places in this country where big houses are selling for $3000. The nice homes in my neighborhood are selling for $40,000. Almost-mansions around here, for $200,000.
Good luck!!
When my husband and I first moved in together 11 years ago, the house he was living in was in the process of foreclosure due to divorce of the landlords and a big yucky mess that was (it involved a VA (military kind – not state) mortgage, so I don’t know if that had any effect on the matter). No one could tell us to whom to pay our rent, so we didn’t. I moved in with him in October, we didn’t get evicted by the bank until March. So you should have some time. I am so sorry this has happened to you. Twice I moved while 7 months pregnant. It does suck.
OH NO!! I hope you find an even better place. And when you’re looking at places, will you be thinking ‘Can I give birth here?’ HEY! There’s a comic or two at least. LOL. Blessings to your family, as you find a new nest, the best nest.
You need to find yourself a nice lawyer who specializes in real estate, and find out where you stand. I’d offer to help you look, but I don’t think a lawyer in PA is going to help much! (But I know that nice lawyers exist, because I know two of them.) That “cash for keys” option sounds awful good to me. I am sticking my tongue out at your rude landlord from the East Coast!
You know, while you’re at it… you might grab yourself a realtor and look into actually buying a house. If you’re a first-time buyer with decent credit, it can be a lot easier than you think, and you don’t need a whole lot of money for downpayment. (Or, sometimes, ANY money!) We put off buying a home for a long time because we thought we couldn’t do it, but then we found out that it was really pretty easy. And, if they’ll give a mortgage to a schoolteacher and a bartender, they’ll give one to anybody!
OK, this sounds like a commcercial on late-night TV. Sorry! (But it’s true… and then no one can kick you out as long as you make the payments!)
